Unlike other precious stones, amber is not a mineral but the fossilized resin of pine trees that lived millions of years ago, and it is a unique organic material with its warmth and lightness.

What Is Amber?

Amber is an organic, amorphous substance formed by the resin secreted mostly by trees of the pine family, which hardens over long geological periods.

In the literal sense, amber means “fossil resin”. Chemically, it is a hydrocarbon compound that can be expressed with a general formula.

Most of the genuine amber found on Earth comes from the resin of prehistoric pine trees dating back approximately 30 to 90 million years. Due to its structure, it is much lighter than quartz-based stones and feels warm to the touch. This feature makes amber a special stone both aesthetically and in terms of use. The best-known variety is Baltic Sea Amber, which has a high succinic acid content.

What Are the Properties of Amber?

The most distinctive properties of amber are its low density (it floats in salt water), its very low Mohs hardness (2–2.5) and its tendency to carry a negative electric charge when rubbed.

Among the main properties of amber are its low hardness, which makes it easy to scratch, although such scratches can be removed by polishing. The word “electricity” derives from the Greek ēlektron, referring to amber’s ability to become electrically charged through friction. This electrical feature has been a subject of scientific curiosity since ancient times. The color scale of amber includes yellow, orange, red, brown and very rare blue and green tones. Each piece is unique and has collectible value thanks to its internal bubbles and fossilized insects (inclusions). These fossil remains provide important clues about the stone’s geological history. Genuine amber may change color over time due to natural factors such as skin contact, air and light. This change is considered a natural sign that amber is maturing and is genuine.

History and Importance of Amber

The history of amber dates back to the Neolithic period; in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, it was reportedly used both as an ornament and as a powerful medicinal and protective material.

In history, amber was known as the “Gold of the North” and formed the basis of the famous Amber Road trade route that stretched from the Baltic Sea coasts to the Mediterranean. In ancient Greece, it was believed to be a powerful protector that provided spiritual balance.

The Romans believed that amber represented light coming from the Sun. Especially in the Middle Ages, there were strong beliefs that the smoke of amber, when inhaled, protected against diseases such as the plague. Today, it is an indispensable material for making prayer beads, rings and bracelets, particularly in Turkish and Middle Eastern cultures.

How Does Amber Form?

Amber forms when pine tree resin undergoes a fossilization process lasting millions of years under high pressure and temperature in an oxygen-free environment.

The formation process consists of three main stages:

1. Resin Secretion: Trees secrete resin to protect themselves against injuries. This resin may trap insects and plant fragments.

2. Copal Stage: The resin remains buried for tens of thousands of years and begins to undergo its first hardening. This young resin is called copal. Copal is softer and less stable than amber.

3. Fossilization (Polymerization): After remaining buried for millions of years, the chemical structure of the resin changes; hydrocarbon molecules become cross-linked. This process transforms the resin into a completely stable and hard polymer known as amber. Most genuine amber is between 30 and 60 million years old.

Physical Properties of Amber

The physical structure of amber distinguishes it from other minerals; in particular, the fact that it gives off a pleasant pine scent when heated and is flammable is remarkable.

• Hardness: 2–2.5 on the Mohs scale

• Density: Very low; its density is approximately 1.04–1.10 g/cm³, which is why it can float on salt water instead of fresh water. In fresh water it generally sinks or does not float completely. The density of salt water is around 1.15 g/cm³.

• Color: Yellow, honey, orange (most common), whitish (bone amber), black, green and blue (the rarest type of amber).

• Thermal Conductivity: It is a very poor conductor of heat, which is why it feels instantly warm in the hand compared to other stones.

• Melting Point: It melts at around 200°C and burns, releasing pleasantly scented smoke.

Genuine amber releases a resinous and slightly sweet pine resin scent. This smell is usually described as: pine gum / resin, natural tree resin, a slightly sweet and woody aroma, and the scent of burning fossilized natural resin.

Imitation (plastic) products usually give off chemical, burnt plastic or harsh odors, which makes them easy to distinguish from real amber.

Where Is Amber Found?

The largest and highest quality deposits of amber in the world are found along the shores of the Baltic Sea and in the Dominican Republic.

1. Baltic Region: Approximately 90% of the world’s amber reserves are found along the Baltic coasts, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Germany and especially Russia’s Kaliningrad region. Baltic amber is famous for its high succinic acid content, which is believed to give it therapeutic properties. Baltic amber is known as one of the highest quality and most valuable amber types in the world. This is because amber extracted from the Baltic Sea region (especially Lithuania, Poland and Russia’s Kaliningrad region) dates back roughly 40–60 million years.

2. Dominican Republic: Contains younger amber deposits and is the source of rare Blue Amber. Blue amber glows blue under UV light or in sunlight due to its fluorescent properties.

3. Türkiye: As a result of scientific studies and analyses, the main amber deposit known and confirmed by reports in Türkiye has been found in the province of Bayburt, especially around the village of Aydıncık. In addition, artisans and merchants in Mardin have a long-standing tradition in natural amber (Damla amber), pressed amber and “ateş kehribar” (fire amber).

4. Other Regions: Amber deposits also exist in Myanmar (Burmite, the oldest amber), Mexico (Chiapas), Canada and Lebanon.

What Is Amber Used For?

Throughout history, amber has been associated with providing a sense of balance and calm. It is believed to ease emotional burdens, clear the mind and support inner peace. It is said to have a soothing effect in states such as indecision, anxiety and tension.

In addition, the light and natural structure of amber is believed to create a protective energy field in the surroundings, shielding the wearer from the evil eye and negative influences. There are also traditional interpretations that it enhances focus on learning and memory.

These beliefs have not been definitively proven scientifically; however, the fact that amber, especially Baltic amber, contains succinic acid that may be released in small amounts when in contact with warm skin has led alternative medicine circles to consider it as providing local relief.

What Are the Benefits of Amber?

Thanks to the succinic acid it contains, amber is regarded as a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory; for this reason, it is believed to help with certain physical discomforts. The main reason for using amber for babies is the desire to naturally ease the distress experienced during teething. According to traditional belief, when amber comes into contact with the skin, very small amounts of succinic acid are released by the effect of heat, and this substance is thought to provide local relief. Therefore, some families prefer amber necklaces or bracelets for babies in order to reduce the tension, increased drooling and restlessness associated with the teething process. In addition to teething pain in babies, it is also said to be used by adults to support relief from joint pain.

Moreover, in many cultures amber is used as a protective stone against the evil eye and negative energies. It should be kept in mind that these effects do not constitute a scientifically proven medical treatment; however, amber has been used for centuries as a natural and supportive practice in various cultures.

Does Amber Change Color Over Time?

The color of genuine amber may change over time due to natural factors such as skin contact, air and light. This change is considered a natural sign that the amber is maturing and is genuine. This color variation generally begins slightly within a few months and becomes more pronounced over the years depending on usage conditions.

Amber prayer beads are among the most preferred types of beads in Turkish and Islamic culture for aesthetic, spiritual and therapeutic reasons; the feeling of warmth they leave in the hand while using the beads is a feature that no other stone can match.

Amber prayer beads are generally classified as “ateş kehribar” (fire amber – a synthetic, phenolic resin-based material that imitates heated amber), “pressed amber” (made by compressing small pieces of natural amber) and fully natural, untreated amber beads, which are considered to have the highest value and energetic quality.

The main reason for wearing it as a necklace is that the succinic acid in amber is believed to be activated by body heat and to remain in continuous contact with the throat chakra area. Amber necklaces are associated with traditional beliefs that this direct skin contact provides a soothing effect around the throat, neck and chest regions. It is thought that the succinic acid naturally present in amber is gently activated by body heat and provides a softening influence especially around the neck area.

In some cultures, amber necklaces are believed to offer supportive benefits in conditions such as thyroid sensitivity, tonsillitis and neck tension. There are also traditional interpretations that they enhance expressive power and inner balance.

The price of amber is determined by factors such as the age of the stone (whether it is antique), its origin (Baltic amber is the most valuable), its color, transparency and the presence of fossil inclusions. In addition, the price of genuine natural amber generally varies according to the quality, clarity, color and size of the stone.

1. Natural Amber: These are the most expensive. Rare colors (blue, green) or pieces containing flawless, visible fossils are the most valuable among collectors.

2. Pressed Amber: Produced by reshaping small natural amber pieces under heat and pressure. Pressed amber, obtained by collecting leftover small amber pieces, is more affordable than natural (genuine) amber but still contains succinic acid.

3. Fire Amber (Synthetic / Phenolic Resin): Fire amber is generally a synthetic resin produced in a laboratory environment using chemicals such as phenol and formaldehyde. Therefore, it is not natural amber (fossilized resin). Since it is a synthetic resin, the term “phenolic resin” is appropriate. However, some sources describe fire amber as a type of pressed amber (pressed natural amber powder) or as a synthetic resin blended with small amounts of natural amber powder. Yet the general consensus is that fire amber is mainly a phenolic resin-based synthetic material.

Fire amber does not contain natural resin; it is produced synthetically in a laboratory (and any natural amber content is limited to very small amounts of added powder, if present at all, while the main component is synthetic). For this reason, it belongs to the lowest price group, although it is very popular in the prayer bead market due to its shine and scent.

Compared to natural amber (especially Damla amber), fire amber is more affordable because it can be produced in a laboratory and does not require the millions of years of natural formation that genuine amber does. However, fire amber prayer beads made with high-quality workmanship and materials can be much more expensive than plastic or low-quality synthetics.

4. Craftsmanship: One of the most important factors determining the price of amber products (especially natural Damla amber) is craftsmanship. Transforming a block of amber into a work of art is the second biggest factor influencing the price. Large, single-piece and carefully carved amber prayer beads or necklaces carry a much higher price tag than raw pieces.

The high price of genuine amber (Damla amber, which is fossilized tree resin formed over millions of years) is mainly explained by the difficulty of its natural formation combined with the mastery required in its craftsmanship.

• Deep History: Amber forms when resin secreted by trees that lived millions of years ago fossilizes underground under high pressure and temperature. This long process makes the material inherently rare and valuable.

• Limited Resource: Genuine Damla amber is extracted from specific geographic regions such as the Baltic area under challenging and limited conditions. Unlike synthetic materials, its production cannot be increased at will.

Quality, Color and Unique Inclusions of Amber

• Fossilized Amber (Inclusions): The most valuable type of amber contains small insects, leaves or plant fragments that were trapped while the resin was still fresh. Such pieces have both scientific and collectible value and can reach astronomical prices.

• Special Colors: Rare tones such as blue, green and clear honey color are much more expensive than common opaque and matte tones.

• Degree of Purity: Amber blocks that are highly pure and have few imperfections are more valuable because they are ideal for carving and polishing.

Amber Craftsmanship Requiring Mastery

Transforming a raw block of amber into a work of art is the second most important factor influencing its price. Amber is a very brittle material. Carving a large amber block into a single, large and flawless form such as a prayer bead or necklace pendant without cracking or losing material requires great mastery and time. This naturally means a much higher price tag compared to pressed amber pieces made from smaller, imperfect fragments.

For prayer beads, bracelets or necklaces, the fact that each bead is perfect, smooth and symmetrical shows the artisan’s skill and precision. A hand-crafted prayer bead set is always more valuable than one produced by machine in mass production. Large-bead (Mascot / Efe size) or heavy prayer beads naturally require much more raw material (by weight), which also increases the price.

When all these factors come together (rare, fossilized, large and masterfully crafted Damla amber), the resulting piece becomes not only an accessory but also an artwork with high collectible and investment value.

How to Identify Genuine Amber (Damla Amber)?

Genuine amber can be identified by its unique physical and chemical properties: it floats in salt water, shows fluorescence under UV light and emits a pine scent when rubbed or heated.

1. Salt Water Test: The density of amber (approximately 1.04–1.10 g/cm³) is slightly higher than that of normal water but close to that of dense salt water (around 1.15 g/cm³). Due to this low density, it floats on the surface of a glass of salt water (prepared by mixing 4–5 tablespoons of salt into one glass of water). Plastic or glass imitations sink to the bottom.

2. Scent (Friction) Test: When amber is rubbed vigorously in the palm of your hand for some time, it warms up and emits a light, pleasant pine resin scent. Plastic imitations release a chemical smell, while glass has no smell at all.

3. UV Light Test: Genuine amber (especially Baltic amber) usually shows a blue-green or yellowish fluorescent effect under ultraviolet (UV) light. Under long-wave UV (black light), the surface of amber emits a bright blue or greenish glow. Simple plastic imitations do not show this effect. However, some synthetic resin imitations may contain special dyes to mimic this effect, so careful examination is required.

4. Needle Test (Use with Caution): When a heated needle is touched to amber, it penetrates with difficulty and releases a pine resin scent, while plastic melts immediately and gives off a chemical odor. Because this test damages the piece, it should only be used as a last resort and with great care.

5. Laboratory Test: For the most reliable and scientific result, laboratory analyses such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), which examine the chemical composition and spectrum of the material, can be performed.
